I am still trying to come to grips with the price / performance issues of these cameras. It is hard to find the features you want and keep the price under ~$750

That's easy. Just wait a while <g>. These things halve in price every year or so.

Of course, the killer is that by the time the price drops under your price point, another better camera appears above it and the old one is no longer as desirable :-)
