`Internet Access Charges Off The Table,' Says AOL CEO Steve Case

DULLES, Va., May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a statement of Steve Case, Chairman and CEO of America Online, Inc. (NYSE:AOL):

``AOL's interest all along has been to ensure that the potential benefits of the Internet are available and affordable for all Americans. While the intent of the FCC was to be broad-based in developing its new rules for universal service, we recognize that the provisions announced today will have a disproportionate impact on Internet service providers and their consumers. However, on balance we're prepared to accept these additional costs because the FCC has taken off the table the possibility of additional access charges targeted at Internet use. The continued vitality of the Internet service industry is dependent on a public policy objective that guarantees affordable access to all of the benefits of the Internet to all Americans.''

I'll gladly pay the $1.50 more a month for the additional phone line rather than get charged for my internet usage time.
