Interesting take, I actually believe the record companies have things completely backward. Napster will create more sales than it takes away. Here's my reasoning....Remember years ago when cassettes first came out? Everyone was up in arms because you could copy them and the record companies went nuts trying to stop it. Well, what happened? In the end the industry adopted cassettes over 8 tracks and sales exploded. Why?

I believe there is a cause and effect loop which happens when people start listening to an artist. The person hearing it for the first few times free, then becomes a fan, and when the new CD is launched can't wait to get hold of it. They may also want to attend their next concert, or see them perform on television, maybe even buy a few products such as tee-shirts.

The same thing I believe will happen with Napster and MP3. People who may never have been exposed to an artist will be more likely to get exposed and become fans. And the profit pie will enlarge for record companies and artists instead of shrink.

For me personally, I just downloaded 5 Jim Croce songs. I haven't thought about listening to his music in years and now I might be inclined to purchase a greatest hits CD next time I'm at the music store. Who knows...It's one of those unknown and unknowables which are difficult to measure.
