re: cab drivers who won't take people short distances

A cab driver in Rome at a stand in front of a very expensive hotel ... refused to take my 76-year-old mother and me about ten blocks because it was too short a distance for him.

I had the same experience in Miami last year. The reason that the cab driver didn't want to go a short distance, I believe, is that after dropping off the customer the cab would then go back to the hotel and have to enter the end of the cab line again. That means a long wait to get another customer. My wife and I (much younger than 76) had to walk, but it was only about 5 blocks. Perhaps if we had tried to hail a passing cab on the street we would have had better luck.
