Marcos can address this better than I, but my impression is that Cuba is not unique among nations in having citizens who feel compelled to "chop sugar cane", or slave away in textile factories under oppressive conditions.

I just saw a television report highlighting horrendous conditions in the Phillipines--from what I saw, these people would feel lucky to chop sugar cane all day! Also, it seems 99% of Filipinos who tried to claim that they "owned" the land on which their families had lived for centuries would be met with a hearty laugh from government officials (or a blow from a rifle butt).

Yet we have the warmest relations with the Phillipines. What gives??????
