Actually, that is not quite true, there was a notion of unconscious mentation before Freud, but he developed it and gave it a more prominent role than it had ever had. The problem is that the foundational observations were important, but they got tied into a dogmatic doctrine of biological determinism, and made all psychological dysfunction a result of poor psycho- sexual maturation. Freudianism probably did more harm than good, which is why I have been reluctant to include him. On the other hand, one might make the case that by inspiring Jung and Adler, and having an impact on art and literature, he unleashed speculative and creative forces that superceded the deficiencies of his own dogmatism, and thus gives him a place on the list. It is worth pondering, and I would be interested if you had any further thoughts........
