Re: JDSU calls in CDN gov't retirement plan

Rose, certainly you can buy calls in your RRSP. I have been doing it with CT Market Partner and soon with TD Waterhouse. The issue is more how JDS Uniphase shares are traded. If you buy JDSU or YDIAN, then it is treated as foreign content and you can only have 25% this year and 30% next year, booked or pay the 1% per month tax on the excess. To avoid that you can buy calls from the Montreal Exchange that sells all the derivatives in Canada. Unfortunately like Nortel in Canada , believe it or not, they do not sell Leaps yet. You can buy Nov. $130 CDN ITM calls for $39. However keep in mine that the CDN options are thinly traded and you will have to wait for a while to get your fill. Check with your broker and make sure your paper work is done.
Here is a link to the TSE/ MSE, click on Montreal exchange under options.
