Hi Mike,

You've exposed me for the liberties that I take with these things.

"Is HFW what Terrabeam and fSONA do? Or is HFW what Winstar and Teligent do?"

Yes. Both, although the infrareds you've mentioned might not apply as readily as their radio counterparts. HFW is something we've discussed here in the past, going back maybe two years ago, when we were mindblasting over such things. It emphasizes the exploitation of bulk delivery closer to where the users reside, much closer.. as in parity with where the HFC nodes reside, as opposed to being spaced several to five miles away, such as some xMDS systems do. One might imagine an extremely high bandwidth rf design which is extremely distance limited, in this space. But one, at the same time, which could make optimum use of frequency re-use, borrowing from the very same set of circumstances.

"What is the difference between FTTX and FTTH?"

Again, you caught me. FTTX covers the whole range of fiber architectures which bring fiber very close to the end user, and not in the classic HFC motif. FTTH is specific to bringing fiber all the way up to the side of the house (the home). While these may seem to taking excess liberties with the language, one may come across both of these terms in these contexts in the trade press, although fttx, less often.
