IBM beats Intel!

I noticed in your profile that you play chess. You might recall that Intel sponsored the World Chess Championship in New York a few years ago and dropped support because of poor return on investment. IBM, however, has found a way to make chess pay big dividends.

The front page of the B section of today's Wall Street Journal has the article, "Checkmate! Deep Blue is IBM Publicity Coup". The article states that IBM has spent $5m and received enormous publicity, including a spot on the cover of Newsweek entitled, "The Brain's Last Stand".

IBM is still the master of press relations and that has a bigger effect on stock price than trivialities such as strong and steady increases in book value.
