SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS TO INCREASE RAMBUS DRAM OUTPUT

Story Filed: Monday, May 15, 2000 9:13 PM EST

SEOUL, May 16, 2000 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- Samsung Electronics said Tuesday that it would increase production of the high-speed Rambus DRAM early, with the world's largest CPU manufacturer Intel starting to recall some computers for chip defects.

Samsung will increase the production of 128 Mb and 144 Mb Rambus DRAMs by 50 percent or more from the present 2 million units per month.

Only three manufacturers produce Rambus DRAM in the world - Samsung, Toshiba and NEC of Japan - and 5 million Rambus DRAMs are made every month.

"We are manufacturing Rambus DRAMs in the ninth production line of our Kihung factory and will increase the production volume earlier than scheduled," a Samsung official said.

"The profitability of Rambus DRAMs is quite good since their price is 2.5 times the same-level synchronous DRAM."

Japanese companies will likely start increasing production of Rambus DRAMs as the chip is expected to substitute synchronous DRAMs from the latter half this year.

Meanwhile, Intel found last week a defect in its 820 chipset that helps the CPU communicate with the rest of the system. The defect could cause some systems to suddenly reset, reboot or fail and distort data in some cases.

Intel has pledged to replace all faulty parts.
