ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 16, 2000--Sawtek Inc. (Nasdaq:SAWS) announced today that it has received the first high-volume order for its new PCS (Personal Communication Systems) RF (Radio Frequency) SAW filters. These devices are used in GSM, TDMA and CDMA wireless phones as front-end filters for both receive and transmit applications. This order, to one of the world's largest wireless phone manufacturers, is scheduled to begin delivery in the quarter ended September 30, 2000. Sawtek now offers a complete product portfolio of PCS RF receive and transmit filters for all global wireless communications standards.
Gary A. Monetti, Chief Executive Officer, stated, "This order is a significant achievement for Sawtek, representing the continued success of our new product initiatives undertaken during this past year. We believe that the worldwide RF SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) filter market for wireless phones requires more than ten times the unit volume of our traditional markets and is forecasted to grow at a compound rate exceeding 30% for the next several years. In particular, the market for PCS RF SAW filters represents a tremendous growth opportunity for Sawtek. The technical requirements for the high frequency PCS RF filters are much more demanding and difficult to achieve than those of the lower frequency RF filters for cellular applications. As a result, fewer SAW manufacturers can offer these critical components. This order is further evidence that SAW is the technology of choice for filtering in wireless communications and that Sawtek is continuing to achieve our goal of providing our customers with complete solutions for all of their complex filtering requirements."
Sawtek designs, develops, manufacturers and markets a broad range of electronic signal processing components based on surface acoustic wave, or SAW, technology primarily for use in the wireless communications industry. Our primary products are custom-designed, high performance bandpass filters, resonators, delay lines, oscillators and SAW-based subsystems. These products are used in a variety of microwave and RF systems, such as CDMA and GSM digital wireless communications systems, digital microwave radios, wireless local area networks, cable television equipment, Internet infrastructure, various defense and satellite systems, and chemical sensors.
