Re: "P.S. It really gets on my nerves when people post the WRONG Info. IDC was VERY specific, and it was an independent source, not a company press release. SUN took 65% of high end Unix systems. That is a FACT!"

I thought IDC considered high end to be those systems which sell for over $1 million. Is that correct?? (seems like quite an arbitrary criteria to me) If so, they would not consider a fully configured S80 high end since it costs less than $1 million. So the IDC data would be very suspect to me if they, as an organization, don't realize that these two systems are marketed head to head. Now, do you consider a fully configured S80 high end and in the same performance class a E10000??? Well, based on what I've seen, I do. In fact, there are NO direct comparisons which would indicate how many high end S80s are sold against E10000. I suspect Sun still leads comfortably there. But, prior to the R6000 upgrade, IBM was virtually non existent in this area. These systems are and will continue to sell very well. So, I don't consider your conclusions based on IDC data to have
any more validity than any I've made on this thread. Also,
your apparent continuous downplay on the significance of processor performance on the ultimate commercial success of these systems is to me just plain ludicrous. Prior to the S80 upgrade, the IBM R6000 line (including and because of the the processor technology) was NOT performance competitive with SUN. This is a misconception that I see continuously on this thread. I think you are seriously under estimating the performance issues going forward especially with all the new systems soon to be
released. (Compaq/IBM/H.P.) Also, I consider the Wintel threat with W2K and Itanium/McKinley to be much greater than those on this thread. Just further out in time. By the way, I consider these as just a threat to the stock price - NOT the company. I would guess you are long SUN? I am long INTC.
