Can't give away my sources :) They wouldn't be 'sources' anymore! Actually some of my SEBL contacts thought it was going to be Siebel and SAP. That just wasn't logical with the 'bad blood' between the two. The only logical choice was SAP and Clarify which was supported by other info I had read. Just reading and deducing what was logical vs. illogical. Nothing more - nothing less. What IS important is:

a) Siebel's gorilla status is strengthened.

b) The CRM market is validated again.. this time by SAP's willingness to get a public 'black eye' by giving up their CRM project and partnering with another company. In short.. having something to offer in the CRM space was more important to them than 'bad' PR and public embarrassment of a semi capitulation to Siebel.

CRM is going to be huge. What is exciting is how Siebel is going to use their CRM gorilla status and pry open new markets (especially in the b2b space). Where Siebel is going to be in 2-3 years is what is really exciting!

Only 'bad' move by Siebel was laying off 5-10% of their work force in such a distasteful manner. Very bad PR, will make it much harder for them to recruit top talent in the future, and, worse yet.. potentially released into the market place many talented, trained - and now fervent 'anti' Siebel folks that Siebel's competition will benefit greatly from.... Bad move. Not to mention the 'bad vibes' it creates around the work place! Why work your you-know-what off for a company that doesn't care about you in the LT? Never create enemies, especially talented/knowledgable ones (not too mention the message it sent to the remaining Siebel folks..) for the price of short term greed. Bad, bad move.
