"what you say about employee low moral can be the earmark of a sick and, growing sicker company, but yet at the front of your message you say great things about where SEBL will be in the next 2-3 years. Your comments seem to be contradictive."

I disagree, at least in part. Siebel is far from "sick". What it shows me is that Tom is doing the 'right' thing from a business perspective. That being trimming costs now rather than later, in areas of the company that are not making money as planned. If he didn't reduce the work force at some point he could end up in the same situation PeopleSoft did not too long ago (i.e. rapid build up of employees can hire too many of the 'wrong type' of employees and can, build up some, non performers along the way as well). By waiting too long he could make the problem worse.

From what I hear Tom did the 'right thing' from a business perspective - but handled it in the wrong way and perhaps too aggressively.

What this tells me is ..
a) Tom has a great business sense
b) Tom has a lousy 'people' sense
c) Tom has sent the message that company comes first.. employees come 2nd.. and... employees and the company are not necessarily one and the same...

d) When the sh*t finally does hit the fan (i.e. Siebel has a difficult time). Employee loyalty will match Tom's loyalty to them (of course it seems like that is almost the 'norm' now in this industry.. <sigh>)
e) Clarify/NT could benefit from this move and strengthen their #2 position. PeopleSoft/Vantive will probably pick up some of the employees as well. Oracle may pick up a few folks but only if they are silly enough to go from the 'frying pan' directly into the 'fire' so to speak...

Siebel is not 'sick' - just ruthless... which doesn't equate to 'sick' in the business world.. (unfortunately..)
