Here is some interesting material on education from the Bush site:

EDUCATION
Restored local control of schools, raised standards, and signed legislation ending automatic social promotion
of students in Texas schools.
Made education the number one priority starting with setting the bold goal of teaching every child to read
at grade level by the third grade. To achieve this goal, Governor Bush won funding for reading academies
and emphasized early intervention programs to detect and correct reading problems as early as possible.
Rewrote the state?s curriculum to insist on academic basics, including phonics, and strengthened the
state?s accountability system to measure student performance so parents and taxpayers know whether
their local schools are getting the job done.
Increased the minimum salary for teachers by an average $8,232 per year and expanded after school
programs for middle school children in high-risk areas.
Reading performance in Texas has improved: 88 percent of the third grade students passed the reading
portion of the state assessment test in 1999 ? up from 76 percent in 1994.
Minority students have made strong gains: African-American students in both the eighth and fourth grade
increased their passing rate on the reading exam by 23 points between 1994 and 1999. Hispanic eighth
grade students posted a 40-point gain on the math exam during the same time period.
