In effect, yes it would!

Does anyone know offhand if there is a "poison pill" clause that would make it very difficult to be acquired against the will of Russ and gang? That is assuming any merger attempt would be undesired. I'm sure there are probably some disgruntled shareholders out there who may be hoping for a Lycos type deal where they double their stock price within a week so they can get out and on with something else, but that is wishful thinking.

It is quite common for M&A talk and then action to take place when a group or sector has seen their stock prices smashed, more commonly known as "consolidation."

I would place a lot more credence on Crystal Balls theory of a CHTR+HSAC+GNET entity to face the monstrous competition of the AOLs and Yahoos of the world (simply call the whole thing Digeo?) before thinking of GNET being in any immediate situation of being individually acquired, but you never know in this crazy world, even if it is highly doubtful.

On the plus side, this could force some much needed attention our way, one would think, but then again cable stocks holders were thinking the same thing with the AOL/TWX merger.

Remaining portals, at least the ones thought of offhand:

1) AOL (pseudo portal they have called themselves)
2) Yahoo
3) Goto
4) Go
5) NBCinternet (NBCI 20 million members now per 5/11 story)
6) About.com
7) Go2Net

anything else?
