I think what your bitter adversary was trying to say was that some people in totalitarian regimes don't mind living in them, depending on how brutal these regimes are, their position in them, etc. Sad, but true! There were many loyal Stalinists, loyal post-Stalin Communists, loyal Maoists, etc. Some people just like having the state run their lives. And I guess there's an argument to be made that those people should have the "freedom" to remain/go back to such places, and raise their sea-swept children there. Go figure.
