Why not? Cheeky seemed so appalled by the notion of shaving someone other than himself, as though it were something revolting. I simply let him know that it can be an expression of tenderness. My mother used to tell people about it with a smile as an example of the day-to-day showing of love--along with her telling of my father's making her hot Ovaltine (she didn't drink coffee or tea) in the morning and bringing it to her in bed and then in the winter warming the toilet seat for her by sitting on it.

When I was married, my husband would always adjust the shower temperature for me--a tricky thing in my apartment--before I stepped into it and BTW shaved my armpits lest I cut myself on the razor, which had been my father's--a brass single-edge razor. He'd change the light bulb in the kitchen because he knew I loathe heights and take the tampons to the checkout when the person at the cash register was one of those pimply people who make one feel embarrassed at being a female.

Such are the small and precious gestures of love, the little homely things that cherish. They are waking briefly in the night to feel oneself held tightly like the pearl of great price, being kissed while you are fixing dinner together because you are both there and it is so good and happy. The gestures vary among marriages and affairs, but they are so intimate and so lovely for their very intimacy.
