DRAM shortage forecast for 3rd quarter of 2000
Following increased sales of personal computers and cellular phones, a domestic brokerage has projected a shortage of DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chips during the third quarter of this year.

In a report, Daewoo Securities Co. said yesterday that it expects a 2 to 3 percent shortage in DRAM supply during the third quarter, followed by a 6 to 7 percent shortage during the fourth quarter, focusing mainly on 64 mega DRAM chips.

Consumption of DRAM chips during the first quarter of this year surged 85 percent on year, rising 53 percent in terms of value, the brokerage said.

"Demand for DRAM chips this year is expected to surge 80 percent on year, but production volume is not expected to meet these levels," the report said.

Daewoo Securities said that 64M DRAM prices, currently at around $6 per unit, may rise 60 to 70 percent during the second half of this year due to the projected shortage.
