AL : <<TM has a lot of proving to do>> From investment point of view, it's other way around, IMHO. It's AMD that has a lot of proving to do to prove that Transmeta is not a threat to AMD's financial performance upon which its stock price relies.

It seems that TM emerges as a short term PR problem for both AMD and Intel.

Consider the following facts:

1. Very media savvy - Hired the Linux creator on its staff; Caruso chip pre-launch opera on its website; introduced its chip at a historical site to lure large audience. It's safe to assume that we are about to hear a lot of capable Caruso hypes and these hypes will pose some problems for AMD stock price in near term

Jerry is trying very hard to get across AMD's corporate sales pitch to investment community that 2 players in CPU sector is possible, now he may have to change its party line to 3 is OK too:-)

2. its funding sources ("Gateway, Compaq Computer, Sony and several major Taiwanese electronics manufacturers.") show a distinctive RAMBUS print: More you produce/use, the more you will get rewarded. Obviously, not good for AMD, unless AMD can produce a mobile chip better (performance and power consumption) than Caruso and cheaper too.

3. Dan Niles is a private investor in TM.

All these facts suggest that TM is very capable at dealing with or use media and investment community to its advantage.

Better TM looks, uglier AMD stock price may appear in the months ahead.
