According to Shiller's book, by far the strongest factor in a decision to put money on a stock or into the market in general is still person-to-person contact either face-to-face or on the telephone. Even direct written word, as on this thread, has a lot less effect.

BTW, Ted David is responding with much irritation to criticisms of CNBC over on that thread. Shiller does credit (blame) news media for generating and maintaining a general atmosphere of excitement and optimism about markets.
