The most brilliant part of the ILOVEYOU virus was the fact that it took advantage of Microsoft Outlook flaws.

Microsoft Outlook Flaw #1

Although, the attachment was named "iloveyou.txt.vbs" Microsoft Outlook rendered the document's name in a concatenated form i.e. "iloveyou.txt.." Notice that the Visual Basic Extension is not visible to the user. In fact even if the extension was an "exe" the user would not be aware of it. Outlook aided the virus into tricking the user to the fact that the attachment was an executable.

Microsoft Outlook Flaw #2

In addition, Outlook provides the user the ability to execute an attachment without providing a warning to the user that the attachment might be an executable and therefore can contain a virus.

Conlusion

In order to assist the Microsoft programmers and their quality assurance staff in the development of the next Outlook version or patch, I hereby offer them the following requirements, free without charge, to design and test their product with:

Requirement #1

The product shall render all attachment names in their complete form.

Requirement #2

The product shall provide the user with a warning message when the user attempts to open the attachment inside the product.
