Frank you raise a very interesting and valid point about the new networking protocols (SAN) reducing geographic dependencies and changing enterprise and beyond workflows. Since this recent discussion started out of an interest in GigEthernet and rather than just focusing on the optical variant (as Mike suggested) I am wondering if some one can address the interoperability of Copper GigE with Optic GigE and eventually 10GigE. From an abstract level there should be easy and cost effective ways to link the two; but are the standards and technologies fully compatible. The "vision" is out there with many of the switch makers and carriers such as Yipes. Copper may be limited in distance but there is a lot of it in buildings and the local loop. And even TeraBeam Jolt Airwhatever promise to provide 2 KM hops at 2 Gig (if unshared). Finally back to SAN, I believe EXTREME and others while not taking the NAS plunge are contemplating a GigE replacement for Fibre Channel in the SAN. In addition to continuing the discussion on the merits of each stand-alone tech, I was wondering if anyone has thoughts on the overall topology (enterprise,local, metro, WAN, Backbone).
