Your description of Tom Gardner's Simpleton Portfolio reminds me of a contrasting disappointment that took place in the early days of the Fool. Though I've never yet figured out why in the world the Fool of all organizations agreed to have an online, real-money portfolio that was based on short-term trading, they did. I can't remember the name of the portfolio's manager, but he was no slouch. Immediately prior to managing the portfolio, he had won the USA Today national stock-picking context requiring short-term thinking and skills two years in a row! Despite those credentials, the portfolio was a massive educational failure were it not for the fact that it helped to show that 1) we should never look at portfolio performance over the short-term and 2) that even with such a skilled tactician the realm of short-term thinking can be perilous.
