JW: Sorry about your friend. Sounds like it might be Guillain-Barre syndrome. Onset usually comes after a slight respiratory infection or just a cold, no fever but general numbness starting with feet and then increasing pain. G-B is relatively rare and hard to diagnose unless you are looking for it. Even though we are a stone's throw from MGH, my neighbor had G-B for six months before the docs correctly diagnosed. Symptoms you describe could also fit lyme disease. Are you in tick territory? Hope she recovers quickly. Judith
