Packaged software is not the problem. It is compilers we have to think about.

If the IE bit is tested in any runtime or compiler library then every program compiled with that language has the bug linked into it. AutoCad, Quake, Excel etc etc are not the problem, they can be easily patched. The problem is in some custom software suite somewhere written in Symantec C, MS Fortran, Turbo Pascal or whatever (or ADA and that's worrying!) that hasn't had extensive testing to spot the potential float -> int problem. That's why Intel will have to offer a software patch to the O/S. Which OSes? Windows, NT, OS/2, SCO Unix, Linux, and so on. That's a lot of patches.

BTW I was right about the nature of the bug according to Intel's technical description!
