MENLO PARK, Calif., May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Nuance (Nasdaq: NUAN - news), the leader in voice interface software, today announced the SpeechObjects Exchange -- a library of reusable speech application building blocks that enable developers to rapidly build voice-driven applications for enterprises, telecommunications and the emerging Voice Web. The SpeechObjects Exchange is designed to allow developers to download SpeechObjects, and publish their own SpeechObjects for use by other third-party developers. BeVocal, a leading voice portal, is the first company to make their SpeechObjects available through the SpeechObjects Exchange, which is accessible via the Nuance Developer Network (NDN) at www.nuance.com.
In conjunction with the launch of the SpeechObjects Exchange, Nuance also announced a 90-day free trial membership in the NDN. As members of the NDN, developers receive free software, early access to new product releases, discounted training, discussion forums and the opportunity to share ideas and solutions with other developers.
``Businesses shouldn't have to reinvent the wheel when they want to develop speech applications,'' said Steve Ehrlich, vice president of marketing at Nuance. ``Now developers can simply select the speech components they need from the SpeechObjects Exchange and bring new standards-based applications to market more quickly and with better quality. Working with companies like BeVocal and others, we hope to rapidly increase the number of available components and content for the Voice Web.''
SpeechObjects Now Available
BeVocal, a charter member of Nuance's Voice Web Portal Program, announced today that it has developed eight customizable VocalSuites incorporating more than 100 SpeechObjects for specific vertical and horizontal markets. Companies interested in contributing to the SpeechObjects Exchange should send inquiries to devsupport@nuance.com.
``There is tremendous momentum behind SpeechObjects as the standard building blocks for creating voice-driven applications,'' said Mikael Berner, co-founder and chief technology officer at BeVocal. ``We are pleased to be working with Nuance to drive the adoption of standards-based approaches and best practices for speech application development. The SpeechObjects Exchange is an important step towards building a strong developer community within the industry.''
Available free of charge via the SpeechObjects Exchange are Nuance's 25 Foundation SpeechObjects, a core set of components for use in all voice-driven applications. These components perform specific speech recognition and natural language understanding tasks including capturing commonly used information such as dates, times, dollar amounts, and credit card numbers. Nuance's foundation set also includes a voice authentication SpeechObject, the first reusable component for the speech market to simplify the use of voice authentication and enable secure V-Commerce(TM) (voice-enabled e-commerce).
