Cobalt, <rant> I agree that it is likely that MSFT makes it difficult if not impossible for competing software to integrate nicely with Windows [I have no evidence for that other than crashes, but am ever cynical]. While that might be considered a cunning strategy by some in a company adopting such an idea, to me it is stupid and will make people seek somebody who tries to help them, not hinder them. I think it best that each component of a business stand alone from a profitability point of view. Even some in the Q! camp advocated using the lack of royalty payments to subsidize the handset division. I'm pleased that Q! management prefer the idea that if something can't perform or is better run by competitors, it's out! If MSFT really did adopt such a strategy, I think the best remedy [other than claiming fraud and suing if it amounts to that, which I doubt] is to let customers sort out who offers the best overall service. Customers are much more merciless than the legal/judicial industry. Ford would develop a very bad reputation very quickly if they deliberately made cars crash if they used other tyres. But it would be fair enough for them to specify only Ford tyres. A bit like DC10s went out of business because of factors outside their control. Too bad if a rotten pilot made a plane crash; the public just cares about a DC10 going in -- the aircraft manufacturer should specify that ONLY their own pilots are allowed to fly them. I think that's reasonable. But to deliberately make a plane crash if a wrong pilot got control would NOT be the way to get customers. Foolproof is best. That includes computer operating systems and any damn thing at all which might run on them. </Rant> Over and out... Mq
