Brokering a FlashVision LLC & Sony Partnership

Sony would do well to consider accepting SanDisk's hand in friendship. Sony's recognition of FlashVision, the Toshiba/SanDisk JV, would be a step in the right direction.

Flash memory manufacturers as a whole would benefit by the concerted efforts of these industry leaders. In my opinion, everyone wins. But for the time being the ball appears to be in Sony's court. I cannot believe a meaningful long-term relationship with Lexar Media is in the cards. And Lexar's lack of flash memory expertise does nothing to advance Sony's cause.

I have no trouble with Sony's promotion of the Memory Stick format. Eventually consumers will decide the fate of Memory Stick and Magic Gate. A cooperative approach to impregnating the consumer market with the concept of removable non-volatile storage will help everyone.

Maybe some middle-level Sony executive will wake up and smell the coffee one morning. I remain baffled by Sony's silence in this matter. Is there friction between Sony and Toshiba that would preclude such a partnership?
