Yes, wiping out a lot of wealth to accomplish a political result is mind boggling. But a power broker might rationalize the action. You could try greater long-term good for society - after all the economy can be put back on track in November and those investors who keep their powder dry will be fine, a demonstration to the irrationally exhuberent that too much margin is a dangerous thing, pay-back to GHW Bush (*Senior*) for costing him his last election, or just -I have the power, why not use it-. There are probably others
