Just some musings:

On a software development perspective, the Microsoft software development environment (vc++ 6, sourcesafe, and os) is currently the most sophisticated, integrated, and advanced ide currently available.

There is nothing that even comes close for unix development. In fact unix developers (all unix os' including linux, sun and hp) are still developing with twenty year old era development tools: makefiles, debugging using printf statements, primitive text editors, and no visual source control whatsoever.

A software developer (although I would not recommend it new graduates), probably a guy with 3-4 to 8+ years experience, can make a pretty descent living developing using ms' ide.

p.s. the .dsw extension thing was really quite nasty wasn't it. You would think that borland would of fought this infringement based on copyright. There's several more recent instances of the same thing (I'll compile them and list them at a later date). I'm surprised that the judge's finding of fact only dealt with the .htm, .html file extensions.
