All this talk of file extensions is quite enlightening. I've actually never paid too much attention to it until now. If you develop a product you should design in order to protect it and ensure that the product is not usurped. I can recommend selecting file extensions that are very unique (possible containing digits for example .mp3), also give some thought to protecting extension names via trademark or copyright.
