Moments ago the owner of the building was in my office asking me to interpret a police report which was written in French. He (rather, his daughter) is involved in a bitter custody battle. She has legal custody of her 9 year old son. The father has visitation rights to which the son refuses to go. The child is terrified of the father. They are all of Iranian origin.

Recently, there was an altercation in which the father of the boy punched the grandparents necessitating hospitalization for my landlord, thus the police report.

One of the fears is that the father might attempt during one of his son's visits to take the child back to Iran.

My landlord pointed out to me that the laws in Iran differ greatly from the laws here or even the laws in Cuba. Iran is a patriarchal society. Men have all the rights. Women are NOT even second. A father in Iran has custody of the child. Should the father of a child die, then it is the father's father who is automatically given custody of the child. The mother, who gave birth to the child has little to no rights at all.

All this to say that there are places in the world which in our eyes are absurd and worse than Cuba. To enforce our views to the rest of the world entails possibly changing a cultures mentality. Is it our business?

Since some here insist on imposing their views on Cubans, maybe we should use the same argumentation and repatriate all Iranian women and their children here so that they too can pursue Life Liberty & Freedom.
