<...it shows that a for-profit software competitor to Microsoft cannot survive.> TP, I don't know many software products but here are a few which seem to be doing just fine against Microsoft:

Eudora vs Outlook
britannica.com vs Encarta
Various spreadsheets vs whatever MSFT offers
Cellphone operating systems vs PC operating systems
Quake vs MSFT Golf game
Linux vs Windows 95 and 98
[Linux is for profit - I heard Red Hat makes money from it and even if products don't make profit, they are still competitors...for example you are reading MY words right now, not those of WSJ.com or Slate which are for profit]

I bet there are lots of other competitors for MSFT.

GG doesn't think MSFT has a monopoly [other than in the abstract sense that all transactions are monopolies]. A shame GG doesn't come and tell us himself what he thinks instead of needing a priest [me] to do it for him. It's fun being a priest. No wonder religions spring up by the thousand - the priests just make up anything they like and call it The Word! = great fun.
