Wow, what kind of world is this where noble Squires are not permitted to sit at the table?

Not to be too literal, but a world that has been around as long as we have history to record it. "Merely" being noble means that you are qualified to be a squire. Sitting at the table requires something more. To be recognized as a worthy squire, in a realm where nobility comes from merit, not birth, is no mean achievement.

... Spoken as a person with 1,000 years of their own family history and 10,000,000 years within the scope of my onetime/sometimes professional life as an anthropologist. If anything I say in this forum has merit, it is on that merit that I am accepted, none other. One cannot reasonably aspire to be an elder overnight.
