Get Ready for Jiro? Technology!
Now you can get more out of your storage systems and spend less time managing distributed networks. Sun's soon to be released Jiro technology 1.0, on display at the JavaOneSM conference and available in late June, frees you from the limitations of single-purpose storage systems and gives you a more efficient, less expensive way to manage networks in the dot-com age.
See Jiro Technology At Work At the JavaOneSM Conference
Jiro technology will be featured prominently at this year's JavaOneSM conference, June 6-9 at San Francisco's Moscone Center. Ancor, Creekpath, Crossroads, Gadzoox, Hitachi, Imation, Legato, Sun and Veritas will demonstrate an automated storage management solution using Jiro technology and those companies products. You can get the technical details at the Jiro technology JavaU course and sessions by Sun and other Jiro technology community members.

Jiro Technology Does for Storage Networks What Java? Technology Did for Software
Jiro technology solves a fundamental problem the storage industry has grappled with for years: how to manage storage resources on increasingly complex, diverse, and distributed storage networks.
Keeping up with compatibility issues alone can be like managing a spider's web, and constantly creating new interfaces for new devices and software is a drain on precious IT resources. Sun has recognized that what customers need is a storage management solution that can work with any device or software, running any operating system, on any network--much the same way Java technology enables any applet to run on any device. So Sun seized the initiative and led the first industry-wide development of a storage management specification based on Java technology, the Federated Management Architecture specification, defined under the Java Community ProcessSM program. Based on this industry defined FMA specification, Jiro technology makes it easy for developers to create intelligent management services that automate tasks and help eliminate error-prone, time-consuming manual administration. Jiro technology also makes it simpler to configure, monitor, and troubleshoot distributed network resources.
Enthusiastic Reception
Jiro technology has been strongly embraced by storage industry leaders, including Ancor Communications, ATL Products, BMC Software, Bridges for Islands, CNT, CDS, Crossroads, CrosStor, DPT, ECCS, Exabyte, Fujitsu, Gadzoox, G2 Networks, Hitachi, Imation, Legato, Pathlight, Plasmon, Quantum, Prisa Networks, Reservoir Labs, Seagate, SER, Solid Data Systems, Spectra Logic, StorageTek, Tandberg, Terascape, Tracer, VERITAS, and Vixel.
"Ancor is committed to working closely with Sun to help make heterogeneous storage networks easier to manage," said Cal Nelson, Ancor's president. "The arrival of Jiro technology development tools will enable Ancor switches to interoperate with other vendors' Jiro technology-enabled products, thereby reducing the complexity and cost of network storage management."
"Jiro technology will have a significant impact on our ability to provide storage network-based management services," said Brad Rubin, chief technology officer for Imation. "We've already begun incorporating Jiro code into prototype services. Our intent is to be Jiro technology experts providing a range of services such as building Jiro management facades and Jiro technology-enabled components and applications."

"Jiro technology is available today enabling developers to begin creating their interoperable dynamic management services," said Denise Shiffman, vice president of marketing for Sun Network Storage. "Jiro technology-enabled applications will give customers viable solutions for dynamically managing complex, distributed environments such as heterogeneous storage networks."

Preliminary Release Available for Download
Jiro technology developers release 0.9 was made available in February, 2000, and can be downloaded free of charge at www.jiro.com under the Sun Community Source License (SCSL). In addition to Jiro technology source code, developers have access to tutorials, technical FAQs and discussion boards. Look forward to the Jiro Technology 1.0 release at the end of June.
