JGoren and Thread: The impact of higher interest rates on QCOM and G* shows why an intelligent discussion of the technology cannot take place without looking at the broader context in which technology innovations are capable of occurring. This is, as JGoren notes, particularly true in this critical period for G*. The company is cash short because its startup costs exceed revenues. A sudden curtailing of demand for what is admittedly a Cadillac service, which some users may prefer to the Chevrolet type ordinary cellular, could discourage the companies that are working with G* and lead to an abandonment of this unique technology. The worst thing about a policy change such as a rise in interest rates is that the people responsible may have no idea of what it does to innovation, and may care even less.

If I had to predict the slogan of the Bush campaign next October, it would be, "It's the economy, stupid!"
