The European currency fell to a record 88.50 U.S. cents
Friday, extending its decline against the dollar this year to 11
percent and boosting the cost of imported goods, such as food and
raw materials. Oil prices themselves have gained 20 percent in the
last month, while the pace of economic growth is accelerating to
add to inflationary pressures.
``The euro's role in fueling inflation is getting stronger''
as the currency continues to slide, said Lothar Hessler, an
economist at HSBC Trinkaus, who said an increase in the ECB's 3.75
percent benchmark rate Thursday ``couldn't be ruled out.'' The ECB
has raised rates four times since early November.
