I wouldn't agree that the US economy now even remotely resembles Japan's economy 12 years ago. Catchy headline, but I think you would trip over a lot of facts when you tried to write the full text.

Using that argument, no one in their right mind should have touched US stocks after the 1970-1985 period. They were obviously a lost cause.
