Here are my notes on DirCommerce from Brainshare

The presenters were Troy Martin (Product Development Manager) and Michael Brown (PM).

Controlled release was expected to some 38 different sites in May.

"DirCommerce is the ability to extend ANY physical, digital,or intellectual goods and/or services as objects managed within NDS to end users on a "for fee" basis.

DirCommerce consists of (1) API that allows developers to connect to the Commerce Services Engine, web based reporting tools, integration with credit card and merchant service transaction networks, JAVA based --- runs on current JVMs.

Also it is based upon EDirectory and runs on all platforms --- Solaris, NT4, WIn 2000, Netware, Linux.

Any Value Added service can be put into the directory --- video, network attached storage, certificates, software, documents, music, classified advts., products, etc.

DirCommerce is a full transaction flow system. Within the directory it supports accounts, packages (the objects with the defined attributes being sold to the customer), purchases, and reports (of what was bought and sold).

You can purchase objects and package objects in the directory for sale.

The system uses authorize.net to verify customer credit cards and can also use echecks.

DirCommerce --- Directory Commerce Services, is available through Ichain Services.

I interpret that to mean that Novell consulting is involved in setting up these directory based applicaions for the enterprise marketplace.

However I think that this is an excellent opportunity for a stratup company that doesn't want to do what all the other startups are doing --- reinventing the wheel.

Novell has the technology and says --- HERE IT IS, MAKE YOUR MONEY.

This is the same game as in the budding PC days. Do you want to write your own operating system to do word processing or do you want to use one that exists and is proven? Do you want to write you own ecommerce tools and depend upon a proprietary database or use an industry standard directory and package of tools that puts you into the ASP business today?

Novell technology is "><b again AHEAD OF THE PACK, IMHO.
