As reported, if Lernout, a Belgium technology company, completes the Dragon
Systems purchase, it would own 84% of the U.S. market for speech-recognition
software aimed at consumers.
Analysts said this high level of concentration could be a problem for
antitrust regulators. Currently, Lernout has about 36% of the U.S. retail
market, second behind Dragon Systems, which has about 48%.
But Lernout Chief Executive Gaston Bastiaens disagreed, noting that the
retail market for voice-recognition software is only a small part of the
overall speech and language technology industry, in which there is no
dominate company.
