More seriously, the MAJC was sent to fab late last year: Here's the Sun web page for news about the MAJC. Notice the most recent press release was October 6, 1999: sun.com FIRST IMPLEMENTATION OF THE MAJC ARCHITECTURE October 6, 1999 The MAJC 5200 chip is expected to have a clock frequency of 500 MHz and isexpected to tape out by the end of this year. Engineering samples are anticipated in the second quarter of 2000. sun.com Now its the second quarter of 2000. We should be seeing those engineering samples any time now. News reports say that they're being "tested". Wouldn't think that would have anything to do with that Rambus channel, would you? www5.zdnet.com You want FUD?, here's some for you: Maybe it has become clear to Sun that RDRAM is an expensive "boutique" memory type, and will always be expensive. Maybe Sun is working hard to create a DDR version of MAJC. Maybe the complete absence of PR on the chip for the last 6 months has a reason, not a good one for RMBS. Maybe Sun will have to buy MTHs from Intel in order to ship their first product. Maybe Sun doesn't want to do that. Sun can undoubtedly design RDRAM out of that chip, and will be forced to, unless RDRAM dives in both cost and price pretty soon. -- Carl
