Powertel Selects Starbase To Manage Software And Web Development Process; StarTeam Helps Leading Wireless Services Provider Enhance The Quality of Software Applications May 22, 2000 08:37 AM Eastern Time
SANTA ANA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 22, 2000--Starbase Corp. SBAS , a leading provider of collaboration solutions for integrated content and software applications, Monday announced that Powertel, PTEL , a leading wireless Personal Communications Service (PCS) provider, serving the southeastern United States, has adopted StarTeam to manage the development process for their traditional and non-traditional application development requirements.
Subsequent testing has revealed that significant improvements were achieved in the overall quality of software applications developed with StarTeam. StarTeam helped create an integrated and streamlined development environment that was critical to Powertel's successful eBusiness implementation.
Powertel's PCS subscriber base of more than 600,000 users has grown more than 85 percent during the past 12 months. Powertel's software development team required a collaborative solution like StarTeam to meet the increasing demands for more Web browser based applications. StarTeam was selected to better organize Powertel's development environment resources, with little or no negative impact on the development process.
"We selected StarTeam in large part because of its ease of use," said William Hurt, software development manager at Powertel. "StarTeam's flexibility allows new entrants to our projects to come up to speed faster. After the introduction of StarTeam to our development and QA testing teams we began seeing immediate productivity gains, in addition to meeting our objective of improving the quality of our software applications."
The StarTeam collaborative development solution required little implementation time since the existing procedures at Powertel remained in use. StarTeam facilitated increased coordination among developers, enabling an improved and uniform process to share application data. StarTeam's robust collaboration features helped bring technical and non-technical contributors together, while the remote access capability gave Powertel team members from across the Southeastern United States access to corporate digital assets stored in StarTeam's central repository.
"Corporations continue to make investments in the development of e-commerce solutions," stated Lydia Patterson, vice president, products group at Starbase. "Keeping the processes that manage that development effort up and running, even as improvements are being made, is critical. Our customers recognize the productivity and performance gains that StarTeam delivers to both the traditional and Web development environments."
Powertel automated the entire application development lifecycle with StarTeam, from early project design and development to staging and quality assurance. Further application testing by Powertel demonstrated an improved approach to the development process. The StarTeam implementation has resulted in increased productivity and improved development efficiencies in the development organization at Powertel. StarTeam provided the Powertel team with a solution that would ramp up quickly, allow continued use of Powertel's current procedures, and provide the tools to deliver improved quality to software applications.
