Nokia To Offer Free Cell Phones In Japan

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Finland's Nokia Corp. announced Friday that it will start lending out cellular phones free of charge in a bid to secure a larger share of the Japanese market.

The world's largest cell phone manufacturer will launch the service later this month through subsidiary Nokia Mobile Communication KK, which will supply GSM handsets that can be used both in Japan and overseas.

The units will be available at locations such as New Tokyo International Airport at Narita. The phones will be provided for free, but a 1,500 yen sign-up fee will apply, and both domestic and international calls will cost 390 yen a minute.

Nokia sold 78.5 million cell phones worldwide in 1999, but Japan accounted for only several hundred thousand units.
