This can be argued. What is coming out of the tailpipes of gasoline cars ten years and less old ... is really quite benign. Old cars with carburetors and no cats are nasty. Diesels are nasty. Electrics are nasty, because they are indirect coal-burning motor vehicles. Ugh.

And nukes are clean only if well-run, and if there is a comprehensive policy and infrastructure in place for dealing with the special hazards posed by spent fuel. Current nukes are a bit like sugar farming in the US ... they exist only because of a Byzantine scheme of simultaneous central support and penalization. Nukes would require a tremendous economy of scale in order to be really effective power sources, with that scale being most effectivelt applied to fuel reprocessing and finding a way to safely sweep the wastes under the carpet, say, of a subduction zone.

Aside - our nuke boats don't spew out radiation. Sidney was referring to the special case of the Russians simply dumping exhausted reactors complete with wasted fuel into the ocean. We never did that as far as I know. Operational nuke boats, with fissile materials in both drive and weapon load, are squeaky clean from a radiological perspective.
