MIAMI BEACH, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 22, 2000--ALTS 2000 Conference & Exposition, the largest trade show of the competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) industry, opened today at the Miami Beach Convention Center and the Loews Miami Beach Hotel.

Organized by the Association for Local Telecommunications Services (ALTS), the four-day Conference & Exposition is focusing on next-generation technologies, regulatory issues, major financial trends in the CLEC industry and profit-making opportunities.

ALTS 2000 Conference & Exposition has brought together dozens of chief executive officers (CEOs), and hundreds of other senior executives and engineers from most of the leading CLECs and equipments manufacturing companies. With over 2,400 registered participants and over 150 exhibitors, this is ALTS' largest show to date and the largest event of the CLEC industry.

Major sponsors include MetaSolv, Architel Systems, Cisco Systems, Lucent Technologies and Nortel Networks.

"We are proud that all leading CLECs and telecommunications equipment vendors now regard our show as the place to be," said John D. "This year's program contains more of just about everything - more CEOs, more high-tech companies, more exhibitors, and more fun. As this show attests, ALTS is clearly making its mark as the preeminent leader of the facilities-based competitive local telecommunications industry."

In welcoming remarks, ALTS Chairman Robert C. Taylor, Jr., President and CEO of Focal Communications and David C. Ruberg, ALTS Vice Chair and President & CEO of Intermedia Communications focused on technology and broadband services.

These officials noted the tremendous growth going on in the industry, while highlighting the fact that ALTS members were among the leading companies planning America's digital future.

"The presence of CEOs, CTOs and other top management of today's leading competitive telecom companies, as well as their bankers and financiers, has offered participants enormous opportunities not only for sharing the latest ideas, but also for business networking," said Alan Stiffler, Vice President of Association Affairs for ALTS.

Press Conferences have also been scheduled to give participating companies the opportunity to announce new products and services. ADTRAN, Architel and XEL Communications are holding press conferences today from 12:00 noon to 2:30 p.m., while MCK Communications, Peleton, Alidian and National Independent Billing will hold theirs on Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
