Copper Mountain Debuts Multi-mode ADSL Line Card With Breakthrough Performance and Port Density for CopperEdge DSL Concentrator Family Full-Rate ADSL Line Card Offers Data Service Simultaneously with POTS on a Single Copper Pair and Supports All ADSL Modes PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 22, 2000-- Rounding out its broad range of business and consumer DSL solutions, Copper Mountain Networks, Inc., (Nasdaq:CMTN - news) today announced a new multi-mode Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) Line Card that will deliver simultaneous voice and data services over a single-copper-pair telephone line. Featuring user download speeds of up to 8.064 Mbps and a line reach extending as far as 28,000 feet from a central office (CO), the CopperEdge© ADSL Line Card will provide a mass-market solution for service providers seeking to capitalize on the fast-growing consumer DSL market. The line card supports 24 ports, a density made possible by third-generation transceiver technology, ensuring that service providers need not sacrifice port density to offer Full-Rate ADSL.
``Copper Mountain timed the launch of its multi-mode ADSL module to coincide with technological advances and regulatory shifts such as line sharing,'' said Keith Higgins, director of product marketing for Copper Mountain. ``With 24 ports, support for multiple ADSL modes, a maximum line speed of 8 Mbps, and the ability to operate seamlessly in the thousands of DSL concentrators that Copper Mountain has deployed worldwide, our service provider partners will have an industry-leading solution for the burgeoning consumer broadband market.''
The new card will enable simultaneous data and baseband voice service on a single-copper-pair line, which opens up access to high-speed DSL service to consumers without requiring them to purchase multiple telephone lines for their residence. The CopperEdge ADSL Line Card will support simultaneous data and Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) on a single copper pair.
``The new line-sharing regulation means that the consumer market for DSL is poised for an explosion,'' said Peter Meade, managing partner with TeleResearch Inc. ``Copper Mountain's customers already have more than one million DSL ports in place, and this new line card ideally positions them to quickly capture a larger portion of the consumer market.''
Industry analyst firm Cahners In-Stat Group predicts the number of residential DSL subscribers in North America will rise from 739,000 in 1999 to more than 9.7 million in 2003.
IP IQ and ATM ADSL: Concentrator-Based Intelligence for Scalable, Converged Services
As new, IP-based broadband services emerge, the market is rapidly moving toward converged service delivery--Internet access, voice lines, videoconferencing, virtual private networks, and other value-added services--all through a single provider. By extending network intelligence to the DSL concentrator, Copper Mountain's IP IQ(tm) feature set dynamically recognizes user profiles and mission-critical services at the IP layer and ensures that high-priority packets are prioritized to offer a high-quality end user experience. Concentrator-based intelligence offers service providers the tools they need to scale services to millions of users as well as Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms to support multiple types of voice and data traffic.
Multi-Mode ADSL Support with High Performance
The versatile CopperEdge ADSL Line Card will support all variants of ADSL with the highest performance available, allowing providers to quickly adapt to the needs of various consumer markets. The card will support full-rate ANSI T1.143 Issue 2 ADSL and G.992 (G.dmt) ADSL at downstream transmit rates of up to 8.064 Mbps, and G.lite ADSL service at up to 4.0 Mbps, making it 30 percent faster than any competing card. All modes support upstream transmit speeds of 1.024 Mbps. In addition, the card also supports Carrierless Amplitude Phase/Rate Adaptive DSL (CAP/RADSL) at downstream transmit speeds of up to 7.168 Mbps, and upstream speeds of up to 1.088 Mbps, giving subscribers who already use such CPE a choice of service providers. The card will instantly configure ports to customer premise equipment (CPE), selecting the correct ADSL modulation.
New Chip Set Offers Highest Port Density
Based on a next-generation GlobeSpan chipset, the CopperEdge ADSL Line Card will support up to 24 multi-mode ADSL ports per card for maximum subscriber capacity. The card employs the latest version of the Titanium Fourte(tm) DSL chipset from GlobeSpan, a leading provider of integrated circuits for DSL applications. The new chipset reduces power and increases deployable density over other solutions on the market, and it allows the CopperEdge ADSL Line Card to simultaneously process four lines per chipset, rather than one.
Standards-Based Technology Ensures Support
As the market-share leader in business DSL equipment, Copper Mountain has led the industry in promoting and supporting standards. The CopperEdge ADSL Line Card complies with International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards, making it easy for Copper Mountain's CopperCompatible(tm) CPE partners to develop standards-based companion CPE. The ADSL Line Card is designed to operate in CopperEdge 200 or 150 DSL concentrator and will interoperate with CPE from 2-Wire, 3Com, Alcatel, Arescom, Cayman Systems, Efficient, Intel, Lucent, Motorola, Netopia, Ramp Networks, and Xpeed.
Price and Availability
Copper Mountain's ADSL Line Card will be generally available in September 2000 at a U.S. list price of $12,995.
