Strong Growth in Digital Modem Shipments in Q1 2000
Deployment Issues Key to DSL Growth
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 22, 2000--Worldwide digital modem shipments topped 2.2 million in Q1 2000, according to Cahners In-Stat Group, a high-tech market research firm.

During the same period, In-Stat reports that worldwide ADSL modem shipments grew 46% and cable modem shipments grew 38% sequentially over Q4 1999.

In-Stat believes that provisioning issues such as distance limitations and the need for technician-assisted installations are holding back the growth of DSL modem shipments.

``Many of the obstacles to deployment are now being overcome, allowing pent-up demand to be satisfied. Coupled with deployments in new markets, it's clear that DSL in any flavor will continue to enjoy success in the foreseeable future,'' said Mike Lowe, Senior Industry Analyst for In-Stat's Advanced Carrier Strategies Service.

``Now that line sharing is a reality, it has become easier for new competition to enter the residential space, which will, in turn, fuel future growth.''

In-Stat also found that in Q1 2000:

Efficient Networks emerged as the leader in ADSL modem
shipments, with a 24.5% market share, only four points ahead

of former market leader, Alcatel, who secured a 21% market

share. Fujitsu/Orckit and Cisco accounted for much of the

remaining market, with 17.4% and 17.3% market shares

respectively.

The cable modem market was defined by Motorola's acquisition
of General Instruments, which further solidified Motorola as

the leader in this segment, with a 39% market share.

Cisco and Motorola once again led the cable head-end market,
with a combined market share of 57.5%.

The report Q1 2000 Analog and Digital Modem Market Analysis (No. CQ0002M7), provides quarterly market shares for analog, cable and ADSL modem vendors and three quarterly rolling forecasts for those markets.
