I will trot out my conspiracy theory again, because I have seen these unusual small volume trades too often.
I believe:

Some traders, perhaps with a little help from a broker, will put in nucance bids in order to skew the high and/or low for the day. Why? because the other traders all have a couple of dozen one-minute tick windows open and are looking for changes and trends. When a trade gets through at a big price difference it causes the scale factor on these windows to change. This hides the action, at least for a while, since price changes of 1 or 2 points no longer show up as much movement (since the vertical scale is now adjusted for a larger swing). I think it is a game that some day traders play on other traders.
