My husband was talking to a friend at work who is a Colombian, working here as a foreign national- he had an interesting observation. He said that during the protests in Miami you didn't see the Cubans of black ancestry- that you only saw the European looking Cubans. He thought there was probably a racial/economic split in the Cuban community between light skinned Cubans and Cubans of black ancestry who probably face discrimination here from Americans in general and from the lighter skinned Cuban Americans. I thought that was interesting. I hadn't thought about the issue that way. But since black Americans discriminate somewhat (at least according to black writers) between dark and lighter skinned blacks- it really wouldn't be surprising if the Cuban community is split that way.
